Compare means to discuss how two people, places, or
things are similar.
Using
comparative structures
These words
and phrases are used for writing comparisons:

And :
Cindy and Cintya are beautifull.
2.
Both :
Both of the thesis have written.
3.
Both … and :
Both the beach and mountain have incredible scenery.
4.
Also :
Toyota is expensive car. Mitsubishi is also expensive car.
5.
Too :
Alya is my friend and Risma is too.
6.
Neither … nor :
Neither Nia nor Lia joined the speech contest.
7.
The same as :
Icha’s bag has the same colour as Dita’s bag.
8.
As+adj+as :
My uncle is as rich as my neighbour.
9.
Like wise, similar to, similarly, etc.

Contrast means to discuss how two people, places, or
things are different.
Using
contrastive structures
These words
and phrases are used for writing contrasts:
1.
More+adj+than :
I eat rice more than yesterday.
My mother is more beautifull than
me.
2.
Adj+er+than :
Noni’s house is smaller than her sister’s house.
3. But, while,
though : Football competition will be
held in Surabaya, but / while / though Basketball competition will be
held in Malang.
4. Not the same
as : This cat is not the same
as the one you had.
5. Not as … as : My suitcase is not as
heavy as yours.
6. Different
from :The three people are different
from each other.
7. In contrast,
however, on the other hand, etc.
We can make some essays which contain
comparison and contrast, for example are similarities and differences between
fast food and home made food, similarities and differences between use internet
and book, and many others.
